My husband's family feels strongly about this one, and I had never heard of it before I met him. They burn Bayberry candles on New Year's Day for luck. I get 2 candles every year in my stocking from his Mom. And, it says right on the box: " A bayberry candle burned to the socket puts luck in the home, food in the larder and gold in the pocket". It's funny the things we believe. Anyone else have any interesting traditions for starting the new year?

Mark's Grandma always cooked pork roast with sauerkraut on New Year's - a German tradition maybe? I have heard of the bayberry candle but I'd forgotten about that. Happy New Year!
I'm from the south, where we always eat black eyed peas at the New Year for luck.
I generally cook pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes......I'm the only one who likes it for the most part....but I do it every year anyway...maybe I should make everyone happy and just switch to the candle next year?????
I never had any New Year's traditions until I moved here...it must have been a non-event in my home because I can't remember a thing about it until I went to college???
But, now we do the pork and saurkraut thing - that candle would smell so much better!
